ABOUT TERRY KENNEDY

Kennedy believes in systems, training, and motivation.   Appreciation’s culture starts from their bright, cheery blue and green logo and carries into the “family” feel of all interactions. Recently, he changed the company's core values to "Drive, Fun, Love." And the mantra to "We help a lot of people. We create life changing wealth. We get better every day." Kennedy invests in an annual national convention, sales contests, and incentive trips. Kennedy personally conducts weekly national calls, invested in hiring a well-known author on sales coaching as the company’s President of Sales, and invested heavily in a “New Business Concierge” system that allows agents to focus on writing business while a full-time staff member handles the back-end paperwork and communicates with carriers. No other sales force in our niche provides the support to their independent agents quite like Kennedy does at Appreciation Financial. Kennedy acknowledges that reinvestment requires sacrifice in the short term, however nothing is more important than building a company that will stand the test of time and serve to provide for thousands of families.

Kennedy is hands on and continuously working on goals for the company.   He changed Appreciation Financial's core values to "Drive, Fun, Love". And the company's mantra to "We help a lot of people. We create life changing wealth. We get better every day." He formed committees (recruiting, leadership, training, sales, technology, and marketing) and assigned company leaders as committee heads. He then, ensured all of his committees were on Asana, a project management platform, so that he could be up to speed on every vital task and the status of it. On top of all this, he still has time to meet with his home office employees once a week for "Power Hour". Here, Kennedy selects an inspirational book for his staff to read and he conducts weekly discussions on the book's chapters. He also has his staff set goals, write them down, and keep him updated on the status of their goals. He generously helped many employees achieve their goals by funding tuitions, offering legal expertise services, assisting with down payments towards the purchase of a car, offering to pay for piano lessons to support an employee's dream of learning to play, and more.

Kennedy has a feverish goal to grow his company   by 10,000 agents in the next five years. He is working towards this goal by implementing new and innovative programs company wide. He started the "What are you doing after school?" initiative that offers teachers a part-time position with the company to make money from simply providing referrals and warm introductions to the people that they know. He created a national "Fact Finder Folder" for agents to use when gathering client information. The folder resembles a house and has "four corners" (income, assets, debt, and insurance) to make sure that prospective clients have a "solid foundation" for their retirement and their financial future. He also started a program called "Operation Duplication" which allows agents to essentially duplicate themselves by having a representative call previous clients on their behalf to conduct annual reviews and follow up appointments. This frees up time for agents, giving them the opportunity to help more clients and make more money. Kennedy also introduced a new service to his sales-force that helps people get out of debt. Kennedy has a purposeful drive and huge heart for helping and giving back. He is successful while at the same time staying humble and active in his company and employee’s lives. Plus, he is a husband and father to four daughters.

HIS VISION

Focused on providing solutions for all areas of your life, including insurance and retirement planning, the birth of Appreciation Financial happened in a classroom. Kennedy saw the 403 market as under-served and deserving of help. The volatility of public retirement systems, constant union v. school district battles that often impact teacher retirements, create a niche market in need of a professional sales-force to educate the educators and help them retire with dignity. 

Kennedy began the process of learning a “system” and working within the rules and regulations of school districts. He met client after client who needed and appreciated his help. Kennedy visited more than 1,000 schools and has personally helped nearly 2,000 teachers plan for a vibrant life after the final bell rings. 

He knew a sales force was needed and personally funded a solution to begin quickly hiring by investing in his own multi-pay software. This model allowed the agents that he trained to train others and get paid to do so. His years of failing and succeeding turned into his personal training that could remain intact as each new person imparted it on their trainees. 

Kennedy always believed in his vision.  He has kept the company cash based without debt and reinvested year over year. He faced ridicule from his then-wife and family who insisted he “get a job.” He took the risk to continue reinvesting all profit maintaining his modest lifestyle and tuning out those who did not believe in his vision.  His reinvestments focused on more software to help agents succeed with a proprietary customer relationship manger tool, upgraded commission system, and digital training materials so the sales force continues to use his personally tested methods to maneuver in schools, stay in compliance, and build their own teams. 


Kennedy’s “teams” do not look like the typical insurance and financial services industry.  With a high percentage of female agents, agents of color, and a medium age of 32, the Appreciation sales-force is a young, diverse team excited about helping people and growing their business. This often takes insurance carriers who play in a mostly older, white male dominated space by surprise, however the numbers, good work the company does in their communities and Kennedy’s sheer passion wins them over every time.
